Kirsteen Oliver has been nominated online today for her Homebaking stall at the Milngavie Farmers markets which are the first wednesday of every month.
Assessed today April 2011 by our senior assessor Catherine at Queens Park market in Glasgow. Catherine took away a small box of samples of which all were deliciously moist, fresh and full of flavour. The Gypsy Cream Catherine was particularly fond of which melted in her mouth. Kirsteen Oliver otherwise known as Queen of Hearts Cakes and Tarts has today been awarded with the SHBA. Kirsteen is also one of the organisers for Glasgows Baking Club . Well done Kirsteen

The first of our assessments today was in Johnstone at Papamacs . We decided to stay and have lunch as the day was going to be a long one. This Bistro/deli has a lovely Italian New York charm to it with lovely brick walls, wooden floors and tables and beautiful family portraits on the walls. The menu had a little something for all tastes and i decided on Eggs Benedict - fantastic with perfectly cooked poached eggs and thick slices of ham with a suttle sauce -excellent. The best part of the menu was the cakes and i have to admit the Chocolate Brownie was possibly better than mine and thats saying something !! I was presented with a Homebaking plate to start and just when i thought this was worthy of our Award out comes the next plate - Wow restaurant style desserts including a White Chocolate and Mango Semi Freddo with a Passion fruit soup -exquisite . There was a Glazed lemon tart with a lime Creme fraiche and a Strawberry mille Fuille all served beautifully on a large platter . This was quite possibly one of the best assessments i had experienced in terms of intention to impress and pride on the work being showcased. The beauty about the job i do is finding places like this that dont know how good they are .They dont market themselves to the hilt and they still believe in trying to impress -dont ever loose this Scott and his team as this is the Charm of Papamacs . Well done .
Kember and Jones is in Glasgows trendy Byres Road and is a very fine Deli indeed. Nominated late last year and assessed in December the assessors had a great lunch and were delighted to have a lunch with a difference- Cannellini bean soup !! .The small team of pastry chefs do not disappoint and everything you would expect from a high class Deli is here .Not a premises i would normally Award for Scottish Home Baking because of the type of cakes on offer but fully worthy of the Award on the cakes that were sampled and all made on the premises. Dont miss this Deli if in Byres road .Well done Kember and Jones.

Well Well Well ,what a wee find this small but fantastic bakery was !! My daughter and i ventured into Glasgows Hyndland street today to assess one of the most nominated premises since we started last September- The Cottonrake bakery. On entering i was transported into a French/Scottish baking heaven incorporating all the great french detail in the pastrys and the great rustic scottish Homebaking. This for me personally was one of the best places i have visited so far.Let me tell you why- Its not for its size, location, views or snobbery factor but quite simply its passion from the owner Stefan and the magic in which he produces. He oozes passion for this industry and the cakes are living proof of that.
The attention to quality ingredients is obvious to those that are in the know and the detail and flavour are exceptional. The prices are the thing that amazed my student daughter who thought places and cakes to the standard produced here were out of her financial budget -but no, the prices were far to low for the standard being produced in my humble opinion. I walked away with Dark chocolate brownies ,french pastrys,Chocolate tarts,Apple french flans, and goats cheese and bacon etc puff slices .The fillings were not on the scarce side either. All jams and chutneys made on the premises also.Stefan has only been opened a few weeks and my money is on this boy as one to watch . Fantastic bakery in the City where good Homebaking is so very hard to find - Well done Cottonrake Bakery.
